Exif Viewer

View EXIF metadata from any JPEG or image file. Free online EXIF viewer — GPS, camera model, date. No upload to server, 100% private browser tool.

How it works

The EXIF Viewer reads and displays all metadata embedded in a JPEG or TIFF photo — including the camera model, lens, exposure settings (shutter speed, aperture, ISO), shooting date and time, GPS coordinates (if location was enabled), copyright information, and thumbnail. No upload required — all metadata is read in your browser.

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) data is written by every digital camera and most smartphone cameras. It's essential data for photographers who want to review their technique, developers building image pipelines, investigators analyzing photo authenticity, and privacy researchers checking what information is embedded in images before sharing.

How to use it: upload a JPEG or TIFF file. All readable EXIF tags are displayed in a structured table organized by category: Image, Photo, GPS, IFD, and Thumbnail. GPS coordinates (if present) are shown with a link to view the location on a map. The full metadata is exportable as JSON.

Key EXIF fields photographers use: - DateTimeOriginal: exact date and time the photo was taken - Make/Model: camera brand and model - ExposureTime, FNumber, ISOSpeedRatings: the exposure triangle values - FocalLength: actual focal length used - GPSLatitude/GPSLongitude: location of the photo (if enabled) - Software: processing software that modified the file

Privacy implication: if you share JPEG photos online and location services were enabled on your phone, the GPS coordinates of where you took the photo are embedded in the file. Anyone who downloads the image and reads the EXIF data can determine your exact location.

This tool is entirely offline-capable after the initial page load. No image is transmitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of files contain EXIF data?
JPEG and TIFF files typically contain EXIF data. PNG, WebP, and GIF do not use the EXIF format (though PNG supports metadata via text chunks). Most DSLR, mirrorless, and smartphone cameras embed EXIF in every JPEG they produce.
My photo shows GPS coordinates — how do I remove them?
Use the EXIF Remover tool to strip all metadata including GPS from the file. The visual image is preserved — only the metadata block is removed.
How accurate is the GPS location in EXIF data?
GPS accuracy in smartphone photos is typically 2–5 meters under clear sky conditions. The stored coordinates are the GPS fix at the moment the photo was taken. Indoor photos often have less accurate GPS due to signal attenuation.
Can I see the thumbnail embedded in a JPEG?
Yes. EXIF data often includes a small embedded thumbnail preview (typically 160×120px or 320×240px) that was written by the camera. The EXIF Viewer displays this thumbnail alongside the metadata fields.
